Animals Living in the Tundra Biome

Biomes are areas of similar climactic, geographical and biological features such as plants, animals and geology. Biomes are also known as ecosystems, and they range from warm and moist tropical biomes to cold and barren arctic biomes. The arctic tundra biome occupies very northern climes where tree growth is very limited by short growing seasons. Mosses and lichens are common and animal life is hardy and especially adapted to cope with the harsh climactic extremes. There are also alpine tundra biomes, mountain areas found high above the tree line.
  1. Predators

    • Several large predatory animals inhabit the arctic tundra biome, such as polar bears and sometimes brown bears, arctic wolves and arctic foxes. These animals feed on the many large mammals that inhabit the tundra biome such as reindeer and elk, as well as salmon and other fish that are found in the rivers. To survive in the cold conditions they all have thick fur coats and bigger than normal fat deposits.

    Birds

    • Tundra areas support a large variety of birdlife that has specially adapted for the conditions, with plumage that runs white in winter. Other species found in the area are migratory and fly to warmer climes when the harsh winter sets in. Arctic terns, falcons, ptarmigans and ravens all make the tundra biome their home as well as snow owls, snow geese, tundra swans and many species of gulls. There are also a number of grouse birds, for example, the Siberian grouse.

    Grazing Animals

    • The large plains and grasslands on the tundra biome support many grazing animals. Larger species include musk-oxen, caribou, elk and reindeer, which feed on grass, sledge, lichen and willow. Arctic hares and rabbits also feed on grasses and squirrels forage for nuts and other plant life.

    Small Mammals

    • The tundra biome is also home to many species of smaller mammals, including the wolverine, a large, ferocious weasel that makes it home in cold areas. The short-tailed weasel -- also known as the ermine -- also makes its home here as does the lemming, the dall sheep and the bighorn sheep.
