How to Make a Rodent Maze

Rodent mazes are often used in science labs and classrooms to test the cognitive abilities of the test animals. These three-dimensional mazes can be constructed out of 1/4-inch plywood, a material that is inexpensive enough to allow the construction of multiple mazes to keep the animal guessing. This is a project that teachers can do with their students as an educational opportunity.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/4-inch plywood
  • Table saw
  • Pencil
  • Yardstick
  • Red marker
  • Hot-glue gun and glue sticks
  • Non-toxic varnish
  • Brush
  • Bait
  • Plexiglass

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 3-foot square from a sheet of 1/4-inch plywood using a table saw. Cut the rest of the plywood into strips that are 4 inches wide.

    • 2

Mark two edges of the plywood square every 2 inches with a pencil.

    • 3

Draw a grid on the plywood square with a yardstick, using the marks as a guide. Each cell should be 2 inches by 2 inches.

    • 4

Draw a maze onto the plywood with a red marker, following the lines on the grid. The maze's corridors should always be one cell wide, with a single starting point meeting the edge of the square.

    • 5

Cut four strips of plywood to fit the four sides of the maze.

    • 6

Glue the strips to the edges of the square with hot glue, leaving the starting point open.

    • 7

Cut additional strips to match the walls of the maze that you have drawn and glue them in place.

    • 8

Brush the entire maze with two coats of non-toxic varnish, allowing each coat to dry fully.

    • 9

Place bait at the end of the maze, then place a 3-foot square of Plexiglass on top of the maze. Set the rodent's cage next to the entrance and allow the animal to run the maze.
