How to Keep Fireflies in Captivity

Fireflies are common sights during the summer months. These insects are not flies at all, but actually beetles that produce twinkling yellow, green or pale-red light from beneath their abdomens to attract mates. These little bugs can put on dazzling displays of light during the nighttime hours and many children or adolescents may be interested in keeping some as pets. Fireflies are easy to capture with a butterfly net and keeping them alive in captivity requires only basic care. However, it is important to understand that the lifespan of fireflies is very short, so they may only survive in captivity for a few days.

Instructions

    • 1

Twist or pound a hole into the mason jar's lid with the Phillips screwdriver. A single hole will be enough to provide the fireflies with air without releasing too much moisture.

    • 2

Place grass in the bottom of the jar. Add a few upright twigs on which the fireflies can land. Offering them a place to land may keep them from banging into the glass as well as provide them with a more natural habitat.

    • 3

Moisten a paper towel and fold it so that it fits into the bottom of the jar. The moisture on the paper towel will create humidity in the jar and keep it from drying out.

    • 4

Cut a small slice from an apple and place it into the jar to help emulate the natural nectar found in the wild.

    • 5

Place the fireflies into the jar gently and close the lid tightly. Do not put more than five or six fireflies in each jar to prevent overcrowding and possibly fighting.

    • 6

Place the jar out of direct sunlight. Direct sunlight will cause it to dry up too quickly.

    • 7

Replace the moist paper towel and apple slice daily. Release your captive fireflies after a few days so they can be free to breed.
