Things You'll Need
Instructions
Twist or pound a hole into the mason jar's lid with the Phillips screwdriver. A single hole will be enough to provide the fireflies with air without releasing too much moisture.
Place grass in the bottom of the jar. Add a few upright twigs on which the fireflies can land. Offering them a place to land may keep them from banging into the glass as well as provide them with a more natural habitat.
Moisten a paper towel and fold it so that it fits into the bottom of the jar. The moisture on the paper towel will create humidity in the jar and keep it from drying out.
Cut a small slice from an apple and place it into the jar to help emulate the natural nectar found in the wild.
Place the fireflies into the jar gently and close the lid tightly. Do not put more than five or six fireflies in each jar to prevent overcrowding and possibly fighting.
Place the jar out of direct sunlight. Direct sunlight will cause it to dry up too quickly.
Replace the moist paper towel and apple slice daily. Release your captive fireflies after a few days so they can be free to breed.
