How to Predict the Weight of an Adult Goat

Goat husbandry is a profitable occupation for people around the globe. The value of a goat is generally based on its weight, so if you are in this market, it is important to be able to predict the weight of your goats. If you do not have a scale designed for weighing livestock, you can get a close weight estimation of your goats using a goat weight estimation tape measure and a weight chart.

Instructions

    • 1

Position your goat in a standing position with straight posture. Measure the heart girth (HG) by placing the tape measure around the chest of the goat located just behind the front legs (armpits); this is a circumferential measurement around the goat's entire chest.

    • 2

Measure the body length (BL) of the goat with the tape measure. This measurement should be taken from the base of the goat's ear down its back to the point where the tail joins the body.

    • 3

Look up the breed and sex of your goat on the weight chart and calculate the goat's weight based on the given equation and the measured HG and BL. For example, a female goat with a recorded HG of 27 and a half inches would weigh 53 pounds.
