How to Take Care of Killdeer Bird Eggs

Killdeer bird eggs should be placed into an incubator as soon as possible to give chicks the highest chance for survival and successful hatching. Maintaining optimal levels of moisture and ideal temperatures requires careful observation and diligence in taking accurate measurements. Surrogate parents should also invest in an egg turner to keep eggs evenly heated. Amateurs at bird care should consult the ornithology department at a nearby university for resources and advice, including the best plan for releasing birds into the wild when they are old enough.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up the incubator in a moist, dark climate such as a well-ventilated basement. Eggs must be exposed to fresh air but should be protected against direct sunlight.

    • 2

Place an automatic turner on the incubator floor with the motor side toward the back. It should complete a full rotation once every four hours. Set eggs gently on the turner.

    • 3

Set a thermometer on the right side of the incubator floor against the rim facing the center of the incubator so it can be clearly seen through the incubator window. Close the incubator.

    • 4

Maintain a constant incubator temperature of 94-98 degrees Fahrenheit within the incubator. Check the room air temperature periodically to ensure it does not exceed 80 degrees Fahrenheit or drop below 65 degrees.

    • 5

Add water to the small inner trough at the bottom of the incubator twice a week to maintain a humid environment within the incubator.

    • 6

Monitor the eggs closely for signs of shell penetration and hatching. Typical killdeer gestation is 28 days, so any eggs that do not hatch after that time will probably not hatch at all.
