Mammals
Mammals as a group have many species from each dietary type, including herbivores. The mammalian order artiodactyla, for example, which contains over 200 species, is almost exclusively vegetarian. Animals in this order include cattle, giraffe, hippos, camels and deer, all of which live primarily on plant material. Plenty of other mammalian animals are herbivores, as well including some rodents, primates, horses, rhinos and the largest land mammal of all, the elephant.
Reptiles
Many reptiles are carnivores, especially snakes which all exclusively eat meat. Some species such as tortoises, however, do live on a vegetarian diet. Most varieties of tortoise live on vegetation, feeding on a wide range of low-lying plants, such as shrubs and cacti. Some lizard species are also herbivores; for example, the green iguana. The iguana feeds on fruits, flowers and leaves.
Birds
Some birds can be predatory, such as eagles and hawks, while others feed heavily on insects. Others, however, do live on a vegetarian diet. Some pigeon species live mainly on seeds and grains. Other birds, such as some parrots, feed almost entirely on fruit.
Insects
Over a million species of insects exist, many of which feed heavily on plant material. Caterpillars eat large quantities of plant matter while preparing to change into butterflies. Certain species of beetles eat large amounts of vegetation and can do serious damage to plants. Locusts also famously eat large amounts of vegetation and have in some areas decimated crops while traveling in large swarms.
Fish
Fish are a large and varied group that includes sharks, which are carnivorous, as well as many species that feed on aquatic plants and algae. Surgeonfish, for one example, live on algae, as do clownfish and rabbitfish.
