Instructions
Go to the South Carolina DNR website. On the left side of the page, click on "Conservation." You will be directed to the "Conservation" page. Under the title, "Wildlife and Species Conservation" click on "Rare,Threatened &Endangered Species Inventory."
Click on the name of the county in which you live. The South Carolina DNR lists the endangered species in the counties in which they are usually found. The list includes the scientific name and common name of "vertebrate animals," "invertebrate animals" and "vascular plants." Birds are vertebrate animals.
Look for photographs to identify the birds. Although the South Carolina DNR lists the endangered species, there are no images of the birds. To find photographs of birds that interest you, go the USFWS website. Click on "Endangered Species" on the menu bar near the top of the page. You will be directed to the Endangered Species Program's web page. On the right side of the page under "Find Endangered Species" in your state, scroll down to South Carolina and click the search icon.
Scroll down to the name of the bird. The page lists all of the threatened and endangered species for South Carolina. So, look for the name of the bird obtained from the DNR web site.
Click on the highlighted scientific name of the bird. You will be directed to a profile page of the bird. The page shows a photograph of the bird and provides detailed information such as the size and color of the bird, action plans to improve the status of the birds, in what states the birds are endangered and in what states the birds are threatened. It also lists the USFWS refuge where the birds can be found. The list also includes the USFWS refuges in South Carolina where the bird population can be found.
