How to Net to Keep Swallows Out

Swallows come in a variety of colors but are most easily identified by their forked tails. These lovely little birds tend to make graceful swooping motions as they hunt for insects. However, swallows can become pests when they frequent your barn or home. The birds can leave behind unsightly droppings or damage structures as they build their nests. They're also known to carry disease. To prevent swallows from roosting in or swooping through a structure, hang bird netting over the spaces where they're apt to nest.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase plastic bird netting at your local outdoor store. The netting is a relatively inexpensive way to discourage swallows from nesting in the rafters of almost any structure.

    • 2

Determine where a swallow is most likely to build its nest. Swallows prefer nesting in secure, sheltered places -- rafters, crevices and corners, for example. Almost any flat surface that's relatively sheltered may appeal to a swallow.

    • 3

Position a ladder securely below the place you've determined a swallow might nest. Use a spotter to hold the ladder in place as you climb. Sling the netting over your shoulder to leave your hands free. Carry nails or push pins with you in a pocket; you'll use them to secure the netting.

    • 4

Anchor the plastic bird netting using push pins or nails. Hang the netting so that rafters, vents and roof crevices are inaccessible.

    • 5

Hang plastic strips over open doors and windows to further deter the birds from entering a structure. During hot weather, completely covering these openings can make for sweltering conditions indoors. Both the netting and the plastic strips allow for air flow while still deterring swallows.
