How to Adjust the Reed on a Hammerin' Crow Call

This inexpensive crow call is made by a company named H. S. Strut, and it is used mostly for turkey hunting. Crows have at least 25 different vocalizations, and three of those sounds, the ones that sound most like a New Year's Eve party horn, arouse the ire or curiosity of wild turkeys. The call is assembled from four parts. A black, two-piece, plastic mouthpiece holds a thin reed in place after the mouthpiece is compressed in a green plastic sleeve. The mouthpiece comes stuck in the sleeve, but you can still adjust the reed with a pair of tweezers.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the blade of a flat-head screwdriver into the lips of the mouthpiece and gently twist the blade about 1/8 turn to slightly spread the lips.

    • 2

Grasp the reed with a pair of tweezers. According to the manufacturer, the end of the flat reed should be 1/8 inch from the lips of the mouthpiece.

    • 3

Pull the reed toward you slightly to lower the pitch of the call. Push the reed away from the mouthpiece slightly to raise the pitch of the call.

    • 4

Gently say "fuu" and "all" into the mouthpiece to simulate a crow alert or assembly call.
