Sunflower Seeds
Sparrows prefer to eat seeds above anything else. They consume any seed small enough to fit in their diminutive beaks. Seeds from grass, thistles, and millet are prominent components of their meal plan. These seeds are not part of the human diet. However, sparrows and humans both enjoy sunflower seeds. Scientists cultivated a species of sunflower called the black oil sunflower, specifically to provide seeds for bird consumption.
Nuts
Sparrows and human share an interest in nuts, as well. They are a less significant component of a bird's diet than seeds, because their beaks do not open wide enough to crack most nutshells. As a result, they are usually limited to shelled nuts or those with thin shells. The peanut is a thin-shelled nut that sparrows are capable of cracking. Coincidentally, peanuts are also a favorite among humans.
Corn
Many birds consume corn, and sparrows are no exception. Whereas humans eat soft, cooked corn and cooked dry corn, sparrows typically consume dry kernels. They are especially fond of cracked corn. In addition to keeping a standard bird feeder filled with small grains, people can draw sparrows to their yards by mounting a dry corn cob.
Leftovers
Though there are several foods sparrows prefer to consume, they will scavenge almost anything that is edible. Sparrows will gladly pick through abandoned human food. They are especially keen on baked goods like breads, crackers, and pastries. Sparrows also enjoy fruit and fruit-based products like jams and jellies. While their primary diet shares some common foods with the human diet, when they engage in scavenging sparrows have a menu identical to that of a human.
