How to Make a Homemade Elk Bugle

Hunters can construct their own simple elk bugles in order to attract big game into shooting range. Elk are very vocal animals throughout the year, so making a call with a bugle can be effective in locating and attracting elk in a hunter's area. Although these bugles are available for purchase by hunters at most sporting good stores, some hunters prefer to create their own models. Simple elk bugles constructed out of PVC piping can be created in a variety of lengths, producing elk-like grunts when blown like a trumpet. You can customize a bugle to produce particular pitches that mimic the elk calls heard in their area.

Things You'll Need

  • PVC pipe: 1 1/2 inch diameter, 12 inches long
  • PVC saw
  • Sandpaper
  • Tape measure
  • Brown spray paint
  • Green spray paint
  • Safety goggles

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the desired length of your elk bugle. A longer bugle will create a lower pitch, while a shorter bugle (at a minimum 6 inches in length) will create a higher pitch.

    • 2

Mark the PVC pipe at the desired bugle length.

    • 3

Saw off the excess PVC pipe using your PVC saw.

    • 4

Sand down the new raw edge of the PVC pipe to remove any burrs or jagged edges.

    • 5

Paint the bugle using spray paint. First, coat the entire outer surface of the pipe with brown paint, and allow to dry for 30 minutes. Next, spray a few green oval shapes on top of the brown base coat, creating a camouflage pattern.
