Inside of a Frog's Mouth

Frogs populate the world in abundance, totaling about 3,500 species. Their mouths are a critical component of the body as they're used for much more than just chewing like the human mouth. Instead, frog's mouths perform several functions, from producing vocal sounds to capturing prey.
  1. Tongue

    • About the only part of a frog's mouth people are familiar with is the tongue. Frogs have extremely long tongues that shoot out very quickly from their mouths -- which can also be retracted just as quickly. The tongues contain a "sticky" substance that is used to grab prey. When not in use, the tongue folds up inside the mouth.

    Teeth

    • One relatively unknown thing about frogs is that they do have teeth -- or at least one row of teeth. The top of a frog's mouth contains a long row of maxillary teeth, which are extremely small. Each tooth is shaped like a cone and no teeth are present along the bottom of the mouth. Although the teeth can help to grip larger prey, they do not chew food the way humans do. Frogs also have small "vomerine" teeth, which point inward. These teeth help ensure large prey does not escape.

    Vocal Sac Opening

    • For many species of animals, sound plays a key role in mating. Different levels and types of sounds can attract mates in species where sound attraction has evolved. Frogs are no exception and, like mammals, most sounds come from a larynx; however, unlike mammals, a different set of sounds come from elsewhere. Male frogs have special openings known as vocal sac openings that help to produce a unique sound that attracts females during mating.

    Other Parts of the Mouth

    • When eating, food goes down the gullet opening; when making sounds, air goes through the glottis and into the larynx. Eustachian tubes serve to connect the ear to the throat, helping frogs hear correctly. Internal nostrils - two symmetrical holes on the roof of the frog's mouth - connect to the frog's respiratory tract.
