Saltwater Turtles of the Northeast

States such as Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Connecticut boast miles of Atlantic shoreline. Not only does this mean that fresh seafood is always available, but also that the chances of seeing some of the ocean's marvels are high. For example, the waters off of these northeastern states are home to five of the world's seven sea turtle species.
  1. Green Turtles

    • The green turtle is found in tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide and can be found off the coast of the northeastern U.S. It is a large species that grows to 5 feet in length and weighs up to 700 lbs. It gets its name from the green color of its skin, while its shell is a more brown to olive coloration.

    Leatherback Turtle

    • The leatherback turtle shares the same kind of range as the green turtle and actually can be found further north off the coast of eastern Canada. It is the largest turtle species in the world, growing to 7 feet in length and up to 2,000 lbs. Unlike most sea turtles, the leatherback's shell is more like rubbery thick leather than a bony shell.

    Loggerhead Turtle

    • The loggerhead turtle's range is the same as the leatherback and it is actually the most abundant sea turtle found in U.S. waters. It grows to around 3 feet in length and weighs up to 250 lbs. It is a mainly coastal species but does travel out into the deep ocean and sometimes into inland waterways.

    Hawksbill Turtle

    • The hawksbill turtle is more coastal than most sea turtles and is rarely found far out to sea. It ranges throughout the tropical and subtropical waters of the world and frequents the waters in the American northeast. It is a large species that grows to almost 4 feet long and up to 150 lbs. The distinctive, bird-like beak of the turtle gives it its common name.

    Kemp's Ridley Turtle

    • Kemp's Ridley turtles are the rarest and most endangered of all sea turtles. It is only found off of the west coasts of Europe, northern Africa and the eastern U.S. On the U.S. coast, they range from the Gulf of Mexico to Nova Scotia. It is a small species that grows to 2 feet in length and weighs in around 100 lbs.
