Start by examining the animals in your neighborhood. Note that dogs and cats walk on their toes. Some dogs have visible knuckles while standing. Other dogs and cats may have barely noticeable knuckles while walking. Their knuckles are covered by their fur. The knuckles of squirrels are visible when eating nuts. Birds also have visible knuckles when gripping tree branches.
Visit the local zoo to view more exotic animals. Look at the paws of each animal. Examine how the paws are used. When the paws bend, note whether the knuckle is visible or whether it is hidden. The knuckles of birds of prey are far more visible than those of tigers because of the muscularity and furriness of the tiger's paws.
Travel to a local farm or wildlife preserve. Note that hoofed animals do not have knuckles as they are nail walkers. Identify the animals whose toe and claw joints are near the surface.
