Things You'll Need
Instructions
Place an open garbage can, snake bag or other container near where you will be handling the snake. Sometimes you will have only a few seconds before the snake is off the hook, so it is necessary to something ready to put the reptile into quickly after you pick it up.
Put on gloves to protect your hands while handling snakes. Gloves help protect your hands from snake bites.
Turn the snake hook so the hooked end is facing sideways to avoid stabbing the snake. Move the hooked end of the snake hook toward the snake.
Slide the hook under the snake near its middle section in one smooth motion so the snake will not slide off the hook when you pick it up. Turn the hook upward so the snake's body is cradled.
Lift the snake quickly and gently to catch it before it moves too far. Grasp the tail of the snake to help hold it steady on the hook and support the snake's body.
Lower the snake gently into the container and turn the hook sideways to release the snake. Avoid dropping the snake into the container to prevent injuring the reptile.
Remove the snake from the hook while wearing gloves if it wraps tightly around the hook and you can't drop it. In North America, native snakes that support their weight while wrapping around the hook are not venomous.
Cover the container or tie the snake bag. Carry the container to a place where you can release the snake safely. Lay the container on its side and open it to release the snake.
