Things You'll Need
Instructions
Choose the design or layout for your maze. Some are short and simple; others are long and complicated. According to the website Rat Behavior, the most common styles include the classic maze, T-maze, and radical arm maze.
Figure out how large you want your rat maze to be. Fancy designs will require a bigger maze as well as more work and material. If this is your first time building a maze, start off small. You can always add to it over time.
Plan for the walls of your maze. They should be about 4 inches apart so that there is enough room for the rat to move about and turn around if necessary. Also make the walls at least 4 inches high so that the rat doesn't jump out of the maze.
Draw several rectangular shapes on the piece of cardboard, using a ruler to ensure straight lines and compatible sizes. Once they are drawn, use scissors to cut out wall pieces.
Glue the rectangular walls throughout your maze. Secure them in place with a hot-glue gun. Don't forget to add in a few dead-ends and some curves to keep your rodent busy.
Gather some chicken wire and place it over the top of the maze to further prevent your rat from escaping it once the structure is complete.
Place small pieces of cheese at the end of the maze. Put your rat at the starting line and let it find its way to the end. Once it does, it will have a nice reward waiting for it.
