What Does a Puffer Fish Eat?

A puffer fish is a small, spiny-rayed fish able to inflate its body with air and water. Inhabiting the shores of warm oceans, some species can grow up to 14 inches long; however, most are under 10 inches in length. When disturbed, the puffer fish swells by inflating a sac-like extension of the gut.
  1. Dwarf Puffer Fish

    • Also known as aquarium puffer fish or brackish water puffer, the dwarf puffer fish grows up to about an inch in length. Its ability to exist in brackish or fresh water makes it an ideal aquarium pet. Staples on the dwarf puffer's diet are white worms and blood worms. It doesn't relish aquatic plants for food. Although the dwarf puffer can exist well with other fishes, it still tends to isolate itself.

    Spotted Green Puffer

    • The globular body of the spotted green puffer has little spines. Maturing 6 ¾ inches long, it is an omnivore with a predilection for meat. It consumes different types of sea invertebrates in its native habitat, such as mollusks and crustaceans. It also consumes aquatic plants. In aquariums, it can subsist on fresh or frozen shrimps, bloodworms, crabs, snails and krill. Allowing the these puffer fish to feed on thick-shelled food, like snails, keeps the teeth from growing too long.

    Stars and Stripes Dogface Puffer

    • The stars and stripes dogface puffer, also known as the white spotted puffer, has a voracious appetite and consumes food using its powerful jaws. Growing to a length of more than a foot, this carnivorous puffer subsists on fleshy meals like clam or krill. In its native environment, it consumes coral flesh, anemones, crustaceans, starfishes and sea urchins.

    Striped Burrfish

    • The striped burrfish, or spiny box puffer, has a light brown to yellow darkly striped torso with firm and low spines that safeguard it from predators. The jaws have melded, beak-like teeth that allow it to nibble at fins of long-finned and sluggish fish. It is not hostile to other fishes, but consumes meaty invertebrates such as krill, shrimps, squid and some shellfish like clams.
