How to Figure Out a Bird Wing Span

The wingspan of a bird is the distance between the primary, or most outward, feathers of each wing when the wings are extended as far as possible. Along with weight and length, scientists use wingspan to determine the sizes of all species of birds. While tiny species like hummingbirds have similarly small wingspans, those of California Condors and Royal Albatrosses regularly measure more than nine feet.
