How to Report a Marine Mammal Sighting

Sightings of marine mammals provide useful information to conservationists and scientists. If you see a seal, whale, dolphin or other sea mammal, it is worth taking detailed notes and passing the information on to the appropriate organization. The information can help with conservation efforts and the monitoring of threatened species.

Instructions

    • 1

Research which groups are collecting data on marine mammals in your area and exactly what details they require. As a starting point, search online or phone a local conservation charity, university extension, national park or museum and ask what they know about such projects. National or international organizations that study or work to conserve marine mammals, such as the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, are another place to enquire. Bookmark any relevant sighting forms. In the United States, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration co-ordinates numerous studies on marine wildlife.

    • 2

Take several photographs of the mammal -- ideally with an object, such as a boat nearby for scale. If the animal is a whale, also take photos focusing on the dorsal fins, and the tail flukes if it dives. Such photographs can help to identify not -- just the species -- but also the individual.

    • 3

Count how many animals there are and note what they were doing, for example cruising near the surface or playing. Make a note if you see any babies.

    • 4

Note the time of the sighting, exact location, weather conditions and any other details you observe, such as boat traffic in the area. A GPS app helps to determine the location.

    • 5

Write a detailed description of the animal, including color, approximate length and the shape of its fins, head and flippers. These allow you, or the person collating the data, to identify the exact species.

    • 6

Fill in the appropriate form. Organizations collecting marine mammal sightings from members of the public usually have easy-to-use online templates to complete. Refer to your notes rather than relying on your memory of the sighting.
