How to Polish a Buffalo Horn

Animals and their parts are often kept as trophies by the people who hunted them. To avoid paying the high prices charged by taxidermists, however, one can opt to prepare and clean certain parts themselves. One part that many people like to display is horns, from animals such as buffalo. Polishing these buffalo horns is an important aspect in keeping them looking nice. The process of polishing buffalo horns is quite simple and can be done in just minutes.

  • 400-grit sandpaper
  • Steel wool
  • 2 cloths
  • Wax
  • Mineral oil

Instructions

      Apply 400-grit sandpaper to the surface of the horn and gently rub in a circular motion to remove any bumps or raised areas. Use steel wool on the surface of the horn to further smooth the area.

      Rinse the horn with cool water and wipe away with your fingers or a cloth any debris that may have been left behind by the sandpaper or steel wool.

      Apply a few drops of mineral oil to a dry cloth and gently wipe down the entire surface of the horn.

      Apply wax to a dry cloth and rub the surface of the horn to give it a shine. Wipe clean with a fresh cloth to dry the horn.
