Bottom Feeders That Go Well in Shrimp Tanks

Choosing the right mix of fish for your aquarium remains as much an art as a science, but you can benefit from the experiences others have had. When introducing ghost shrimp, cherry shrimp and other shrimp to your aquarium, make sure your bottom feeders do not compete with them or see them as food. A few recommendations will keep your aquarium mix well-balanced.
  1. Corydoras

    • Corydoras feed on the bottom and will not compete with your shrimp. They are social, so add three or four of them for best results. These freshwater fish come from South America, and are sometimes known as Cory catfish. They are not aggressive and make a nice addition to a shrimp tank.

    African Dwarf Frog

    • African dwarf frogs only eat food that floats to the bottom of the tank. This can help keep the aquarium clean. Since the African dwarf frog will not eat your live shrimp, it can easily fit into your shrimp tank environment. These frogs search for food by smell, not movement, and your shrimp are nimble enough to stay out of their way. Frozen bloodworms dropped into the tank will feed your African dwarf frogs easily.

    Mystery Snails

    • While many types of snails can clog up your tank filters with waste, mystery snails actually clean up your tank by eating rotting vegetation, excess food and algae. Add one snail per 2.5 gallons of water. They do leave the water, so you need a lid on your tank, and you must seal any gaps around hoses and pipes that enter through the lid. Snails do not eat shrimp and will not interfere with them in any way.

    Skunk Cleaner Shrimp

    • Skunk cleaner shrimp clean the other fish. They perch on rocks and wait for fish to come by to be cleaned. These shrimp are quite gentle and will not interfere with your other shrimp. You will want to avoid putting any predatory shrimp in your tank, because they will eat the skunk cleaner shrimp.
