Things You'll Need
Instructions
Lay out the hide you will be using your super soft tanning oil on. Prepare the hide with fine, non-iodized salt if you have not prepared the hide for tanning already or if you feel the need to re-tan the hide. The hide must be prepared before the super soft oil can be used. You can buy bags of this salt at local feed and grain stores. Pour a generous amount of salt onto the hide of the animal so that it is completely covered.
Let the hide sit with the salt on it for at least a day. Dump all the salt off the hide and dispose of it. Do not reuse old salt.
Hang the hide in a dark, cool place and allow it to dry. Allow it plenty of time to hang so that it is no longer damp. The hide should become hard.
Rehydrate the skin using a special solution. The average solution for your hide will require about three or four gallons or cool water, three pounds of salt and a capful of Lysol disinfectant. Submerge the skin completely in this solution until it becomes soft once more.
Rinse the skin in cool water so that all the salt is removed, then hang it once more.
Create a pickle solution. This solution will consist of salt, water and acid that you can find at your feed and grain store. Allow the hide to soak in it for three days.
Remove the skin from the solution and allow it to drain.
Create a solution of water and baking soda. Apply 1 oz. of baking soda to every gallon of water used, then soak the hide in the solution for 20 minutes.
Allow the hide to drain for an hour. Heat up your tanning oil until it is completely warm. Put on a pair of gloves. Rub the oil evenly over the hide to tan it.
Allow the skin to sit for three hours, then roll it up and place it in a plastic bag so that no air can reach it. Leave it in your refrigerator overnight.
Remove the skin from your refrigerator, take it out of the plastic bag, then lay it out.
Use the super soft tanning oil now that your hide has been prepared. Heat the super soft oil up then spread it evenly over the hide and allow it to soak in. Ensure you are using your gloves.
Work the super soft oil into the hide. "Break" the hide over the edge of a table to work it out further and keep it from hardening. Continue to work over the hide in this manner as it dries so that the super soft oil has its full effect.
