How to Cast Deer Antlers

Casting the antlers is a good way to take a memento from a hunt. The antlers make nice gifts and will last for generations. Professional casting and molding can be expensive and the customer may have to wait longer for the completed cast. Chemicals used in the casting process should not be disposed of by pouring in a drain.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the antlers to the base of your choice and spray lightly with acrylic spray. Wrap the antlers in aluminum foil for protection.

    • 2

Roll the sulfur-free clay to 3/8 inches in thickness. Apply the clay over the entire outside surface of the antlers.

    • 3

Use cardboard pieces to separate the molding and to create space for the silicone rubber.

    • 4

Apply the tool gel coat to the entire exposed surface. Fill in any cracks or open areas.

    • 5

Apply the fiberglass to strengthen the mother mold sections. Let the section cure for 24 hours.

    • 6

After the fiberglass is fully cured, use the box cutter to trim the edges. Remove the mother mold from the antlers.

    • 7

Using caution, remove the clay and aluminum foil from the mother mold and antlers. Paint the antlers with a thin coat of Mold Max 30 to prevent bubbles. Wax the interior surfaces of the mother mold and gently replace it on the antlers.

    • 8

Attach wing nuts to the mother mold and tighten. Pour Mold Max 30 into the holes at the top of the mother mold. Let the rubber cure for about 14 hours. After the rubber is fully cured, draw seam lines for the cuts.

    • 9

Use the box cutter to carefully cut seams and gently pull them open. Remove the mold from the antlers. Mix the Smooth Cast 320 and pour it into the antler mold. Roll the mold, to coat the tips. Bolt the mother mold at the center and pour the Smooth Cast 310 in the skull plate. Allow the resin to cure for 45 to 60 minutes.

    • 10

Remove the mother mold and paint with polytranspar paint.
