How to Preserve a Trophy Fish for a Taxidermist

Catching a big, breathtaking fish is the dream of nearly every serious fisherman. Afterward, many anglers will want to preserve the catch by bringing it to a taxidermist. During the time between the catch and taking it to the taxidermist, it's extremely important to properly care for the fish. Otherwise, the end result can be jeopardized if handled incorrectly. This is why it's vital to follow seven basic steps before handing the fish over to a taxidermist.

Instructions

    • 1

Take a picture of your freshly caught fish as soon as possible. For optimal results, it's best to take the picture within the first minute of it being out of water. This will make it easier for the taxidermist to effectively re-create the color patterns on the fish later on.

    • 2

Choose which side of the fish you want to show once it is mounted. Usually, the best way to decide is to simply pick whichever side is most aesthetically pleasing.

    • 3

Store your trophy fish in a cool place if you plan on doing more fishing. If you have other fish, it's best to keep your trophy fish on top of the pile with the side you want to show facing up.

    • 4

Place some sodium borate cleaner, such as Borax, on the fish. It's not necessary to add a lot, just sprinkle it across the length of the fish to help preserve it.

    • 5

Transport the fish to a freezer capable of holding your catch. Cover an appropriate size wooden board with wax paper. Place the fish on top of the board with the show side facing up, and put it in the freezer. Wait until the fish is completely frozen before following any additional steps. You will know the fish is frozen when it is hard to the touch in all areas.

    • 6

Spray some mist over the length of the fish by using water in a spray bottle.

    • 7

Put the fish in a plastic bag and take it to the taxidermist.
