What Kinds of Animals Have Albinos?

Albinism is a congenital disorder that causes the lack of pigmentation in the skin. Animals with this condition have white skin, red or pink eyes and pink claws or hands. It is passed down from both parents. Even though neither parent may be albino, they pass down the gene. Albinism is very rare in animals.
  1. Alligator

    • Albino alligators can usually only survive in captivity. Because alligators typically live in swampy areas, they cannot disguise themselves in the wild if they are albino. They are also vulnerable to sun damage and predators because of their skin. Alligators rely on the outside environment to regulate their body temperature and require long periods in the sun. Because albino skin lacks melanin, the UV rays from the sun burns it.

    Peacock

    • Albino peacocks, although colorless, are still striking creatures. They are susceptible to predators, unless they live in snowy areas. They must climb to the highest part of the trees and shrubs to hide and sleep. White peacocks, which are not true albinos, are often mistaken for being albino.

    Gorilla

    • The only known albino gorilla was the appropriately named Snowflake. He was born in 1964 and found by a group of villagers in Africa's Equatorial Guinea in 1967. He eventually ended up in the Barcelona, Spain, zoo and died in 2003 from skin cancer. Snowflake fathered 22 offspring, none of which was albino.

    Squirrels

    • Albino squirrels are very rare. Many people confuse white squirrels with albinos. Albinos have only red or pink eyes, and cannot see very well. The lack of melanin in their eyes affects their vision and causes injury. It also leaves them unprotected against enemies and makes it hard to for them to find a mate.
