How to Feed Kelp to Chickens

Kelp grows on rocks underwater in shallow oceans along the coast. Its taste resembles spinach, and sushi chefs use it when they prepare rice for their sushi rolls. Savored by sushi sophisticates, kelp is also for the birds. Farmers value it as a source of salt and other minerals for their chickens. Learn how to feed your chickens kelp for their health, but feel free to keep the albacore and sea urchins for yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove dried leaves, or fronds, from the kelp stocks. The chickens reject the stocks and eat only the leaves.

    • 2

Pinch bunches of the fronds into binder clips.

    • 3

Suspend the kelp-filled binder clips about 12 inches above the ground. Hang the clips from nails driven into trees, the chicken coop or anything else handy. The chickens naturally eat enough kelp to keep their salt and minerals in balance.
