History
Indian Runner ducks were imported into Europe close to 200 years ago. The Indian Runner Duck Association states the first duck in Britain arrived in1830.
Gait
Indian Runner ducks have not been dubbed "runners" for a reason. While the majority of duck breeds appear to waddle, these ducks are quite speedy and prefer to travel not by waddling, but by running.
Feeding
These ducks naturally feed on insects, worms and greenery such as grass. The association website states that wheat is one of the best foods for these birds when they are kept in captivity. Indian Runner ducks that are about to lay eggs need additional food, such as pellets fortified with phosphorus and calcium.
Colors
Indian Runner ducks are bred in a wide variety of colors. As shown on the association website, while some are cream, light gray and orange, others are considerably darker with dark green heads and brown necks.
Exercise
The APA ABA Youth Poultry Club states that it is important for these ducks to get consistent exercise. Encourage your ducks to exercise by placing their feed trays at a significant distance from their source of clean water. The ducks will then run back and forth to drink while eating.
