Do It Yourself Skull Mounting

Whether you are a hunter or a professional taxidermist, cleaning and mounting an animal skull often produces both an interesting conversation piece and a stunning piece of home decor. Mounting a skull involves two major processes: cleaning the skull and mounting it on a wooden plaque. One of the most common methods of mounting is called the European skull mount, which requires several household items, as well as chemicals that can be purchased at a science supply store.

  • Dull knife

Instructions

  1. Cleaning

    • 1

Remove the hide and as much membrane and tissue you can from the skull with a sharp knife.

    • 2

Combine water, dish detergent and laundry detergent that contains sodium bicarbonate in a pot that is large enough to fit the skull inside.

    • 3

Boil the mixture with the skull fully submerged. If the skull has antlers, wrap them in aluminum foil so the solution doesn't come in contact with them.

    • 4

Pull the skull out of the solution once the excess bits of tissue on the skull start to soften. Scrape the skull with a knife that is somewhat dull until most of the visible bits of flesh are removed.

    • 5

Put the skull back into the boiling solution, take it out after 15 minutes and scrape it. Repeat this process until the skull is clean.

    • 6

Remove the brain by pouring borax into the brain cavity. Let the borax soak up as much of the moisture as possible and scoop the brain out with a screwdriver.

    • 7

Combine two parts of magnesium carbonate with one part of 40 percent hydrogen peroxide. While wearing protective gloves, apply the solution to the skull using a rag or paintbrush.

    • 8

Let the skull sit overnight and rinse it with water. After you rinse it, let it sit until it is completely dry.

    Mounting

    • 9

Spray the skull with a coat of clear acrylic.

    • 10

Sand the back of the skull with a belt sander so there's a flat surface on the skull where it will attach to a wooden plaque.

    • 11

Drive two drywall screws from the back of the wooden plaque into the skull using an electric screwdriver.
