Baryonyx Dinosaur Facts

The baryonyx dinosaur was a carnivorous animal that lived in the early to middle years of the cretaceous period, according to the Kids Dig Dinos website. Baryonyx means "heavy claw," which referred to the large claws characteristic of this creature. It was part of the Archosauria class and the family of Spinosauria, and walked the Earth more than 125 million years ago.
  1. Diet

    • When one set of this dinosaur's bones was discovered, it had a meal in its stomach area, consisting of fish scales and bones. This indicated that baryonyx was, in fact, a fish eater, making it the only dinosaur known to eat fish. It has drawn comparisons to bears in the way that it likely caught fish through wading into streams, ponds and even shallow seas to catch fish for feeding.

    Size

    • Baryonyx was a large, menacing creature. It grew on average of 35 feet long and 8 feet tall, according to the Enchanted Learning website. It weighed somewhere between 1.5 and 2 tons, states the site, and boasted claws that measured somewhere around a foot each. In fact, those huge claws are part of what inspired Angela C. Milner and Alan J. Charig to name the creature accordingly.

    Fossil Location

    • The first fossil of this dinosaur were found in 1983 in Surrey, England; roughly 70 percent of the creature's body was recovered. Since then, other fossils of baryonyx have been found in areas of England and Europe. One was discovered by William Walker, who was an amateur fossil hunter. His was the first carnivorous dinosaur fossil found in England, according to the Enchanted Learning website.

    Physical Make-Up

    • Baryonyx had jaws that were long like a crocodile's, with 96 teeth that were shaped like little saws and functioned like them as well. It had a long neck, according to the Enchanted Learning website, and two large legs located at the rear of its body and two smaller arms. It also boasted a long tail and a "low-slung" body structure, said the site, as well as a crest on the snout.
