Build
Golden retrievers are strong and muscular. They are not slender, nor are they burly. They have medium length necks, legs, chests and snouts. Their tails are thick near the body and thin out near the tip. These tails are strong and capable of whipping back and forth swiftly. Golden retrievers are agile, allowing for streamlined running, swimming and playing.
Height and Weight
Healthy golden retrievers weigh between 55 and 75 lbs, with females on the lower end of the scale. They are between 22 1/2 and 24 inches tall from paw to shoulder, with males being taller. The American Kennel Club will disqualify golden retriever contenders that are more than 25 inches tall or less than 21 1/2 inches tall.
Fur
Golden retrievers have both an undercoat and an overcoat, which repels water. Their fur is dense and straight or wavy. The fur may feather out on the rear of the hind legs, the underside of the tail and the front of the neck. They shed heavily with the changing of the seasons. Owners should brush them as often as possible to prevent snarling and reduce indoor shedding.
Color
The characteristic coloring of golden retrievers is golden yellow. They may be pale gold or dark gold. Purebred golden retrievers do not have more than a few white hairs and no dark hairs that are not gold in color. Golden retriever puppies may be born with a light coat that darkens as they age.
Temperament
Golden retrievers are the quintessential family dog. They are good with children, friendly, playful and loyal. They are also energetic, sometimes to a fault. This energy means at least once-daily exercise for owners. It also means that these dogs are willing to work hard. Golden retrievers are happiest when included in family time. They enjoy being outside, but may become unhappy if left outside alone too much.
