How to Identify Breeds of Golden Polish Chicken

The Golden Polish Chicken is not from Poland, but some believe these ornamental birds are from the Netherlands. Some call these birds "Crested Dutch" chickens. They were originally bred to be prolific egg layers, so while they produce many white eggs every year, their maternal instincts are not the best and they will abandon those eggs readily. You can identify these chickens based mostly on their crest or raised feathers on their heads. The Golden Polish chicken is just one color variation of the breed of Polish Chickens.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the head of the chicken. A Golden Polish chicken will have a centered raised area or crest on its head. The crest will often be of a different color than the rest of its body which accentuates the crest. The Golden Polish chicken will have a darker yellow-colored appearance.

Feel the area underneath the bird's beak. Some Golden Polish chickens are "bearded," which refers to a natural growth of small feathers that resembles a beard or "muff" from ear to ear. Golden Polish chickens can be non-bearded as well.

Note the color of the Polish Chicken. Typically they are golden, silver, white or buff. Buff is a lighter yellow than the golden coloring. The Polish chickens that are non-bearded can be either white crested black, white crested blue and black crested white with laces of other colorings as well.

Observe the temperament of the birds. The unique crested appearance of the Golden Polish chicken is also one of the reasons that these birds are as skittish as they are. Their limited vision makes any sudden movement they do see an instantly-perceived threat. They will cry out and run as quickly as possible to safety. They are an active breed that does not do well when being held unless you raise them as hand-fed birds.
