How to Stretch Hide

The tanning process for animal hides requires stretching to help give the hide its shape and prevent shrinkage during the drying process. Stretching is done after you have treated the hide to preserve it from bacteria and other environmental factors that can lead to deterioration. Always stretch your hides outdoors to prevent damage to floors and carpeting and allow the sun to naturally dry the hide.

Instructions

    • 1

Dip the hide into lukewarm water. This will ensure that the hide is pliable and can be evenly spread. Allow excess water to drip from the hide; do not attempt to dry it with a towel or dryer.

    • 2

Place the hide on a piece of plywood cut larger than the hide. Spread the hide onto the plywood skin side down, ensuring there are no wrinkles.

    • 3

Hammer small carpet tacks into the upper corners of the animal hide. Do not use large nails as these can damage the hide, causing unsightly holes and rips.

    • 4

Spread the hide with a spreader, working from the center outward in all directions. Once you have stretched each direction out to the desired length, secure with additional carpet tacks.

    • 5

Allow the hide to dry for one to two hours in the sun. As it dries, the hide will retain its shape. It will be damp after the allotted time has elapsed.

    • 6

Remove carpet tacks from each corner and side of the hide. Drape the hide over a large work table and run your spreader over it again, working from the center outward in all directions. Allow it to lie on the table until completely dry.
