How to Deodorize a Skunk Pelt

Most people might think you are crazy for wanting skunk pelt, but it can be deodorized quickly and efficiently with some household items. Skunk pelt is the fur of the skunk. Although it is not worth much, it can have sentimental value. If soaked in the right chemicals, skunk pelts can be hung up on the wall or mounted to show off your prize catch without the nauseating stench.

Things You'll Need

  • 3-percent hydrogen peroxide
  • Baking soda
  • Dish detergent
  • Wooden stick
  • Bucket
  • Vinegar

Instructions

    • 1

      Pour 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide and 1 gallon of water into a bucket. Stir the solution with a wooden stick.

      Put the skunk pelt into the bucket. Soak the skunk pelt for 2 hours.

      Remove the skunk pelt and dry the pelt in the shade for 6 hours. The hydrogen peroxide could bleach the pelt, if left in direct sunlight.

      Pour 2 quarts of hydrogen peroxide, 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1 tbsp. of dish detergent in a bucket. Stir the solution with a wooden stick.

      Put the skunk pelt into the bucket. Soak the skunk pelt in the solution for 3 hours. Swirl the skunk pelt in the solution using the wooden stick.

      Remove the skunk pelt and dry the pelt in the sun for 4 hours.

      Spray the outside and inside of the pelt with a layer of Febreze, Lysol, or other deodorizing spray. Dry the pelt for 2 hours. Your stinky skunk pelt smells fresh and is ready to mount.
