How to Attract Doves to Your Field

As one of the few species that mate for life, doves are a natural symbol for love and a beautiful addition to any field. Use water, flowers and grains to attract doves into your field, and give them adequate shelter so that they will stay. Not only can you enjoy bird watching in your own field, you can provide a safe haven for the doves away from hunters and other predators.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread a variety of seeds around the field, including millet or grass seed, along with corn or bread crumbs. Avoid spreading seeds with husks, because doves will not husk them. They also avoid flat and elongated seeds, so don't spread flax or sunflower seeds. Spread seeds every three days in the winter months when other food sources are scarce.

    • 2

Plant leafy greens, such as lettuce, spinach and endive, in the spring. Allow the doves to feast on the produce during the summer months.

    • 3

Fill a small basin or birdbath with water so that the birds may bathe and drink freely. If you have a stream or pond running through your field, you may skip this step.

    • 4

Pour a pile of very fine gravel near the dove's food supply. They often digest tiny stones to help grind up food in their gizzards.
