Habitat of the Tropical Riodinid Butterfly

Tropical riodinid butterflies are a diverse group of butterflies that have small bodies. Many species belonging to the family Riodinidae are brown yet there are colorful species as well, and many have striking spots on their wings. Their common name is metalmark, which refers to the metallic-looking spots on their wings.
  1. Distribution

    • There are approximately 2,000 species of metalmark butterflies in the world. They are difficult to categorize since they resemble many other species of butterflies.

    Rainforest

    • Many riodinid species live deep within rain forests. There are also riodinids that live in open subtropical forests and on the edges of forests. You can also find some species in agricultural areas.

    Under Leaves

    • Many riodinids are difficult to spot; some species hang on the underside of leaves. Often all you will see is an antennae sticking out from under a leaf.

    Minerals

    • Riodinis have fascinating behaviors and some are attracted to minerals. In tropical rain forests, plants compete for light above ground and for minerals below ground. You can often see riodinids fluttering above areas that have high mineral contents, such as damp spots and puddles on trails in Southern Brazil.
