How to Remove Honey Bees in Texas

Unlike a wasp, a honey bee is not likely to sting you unless it feels threatened. That's not to say that you want a colony of them on your property. Honey bees can make a hive just about anywhere, from a tree in your garden to the rafters of your roof. If you discover one, you should remove it as soon as possible, before it gets a chance to become established.

Things You'll Need

  • Protective clothing (an overall with elastic cuffs and some form of veil, for example)
  • Insecticide (optional)
  • Liquid soap
  • Hand sprayer

Instructions

Buy a commercially produced insecticide. Honey bees are susceptible to most insecticides but you should check the label before buying. There are chemicals in insecticides that may be harmful to humans in certain circumstances; read the manufacturer's instructions carefully and follow them to the letter. Insecticide may trigger a defensive response from the bees, so wear protective clothing.

Mix 1 cup of liquid soap with a gallon of water to make a soapy solution. Fill the hand sprayer with the liquid and spray the colony of honey bees. This solution will effectively drown the bees and is less likely to cause a defensive response than insecticide. For your own safety, you should still wear some form of protective clothing.

Hire a registered beekeeper or pest controller to come and remove the bees for you. Make sure that the person or business you hire has a license from the Texas Apiary Service, as required by Texas state law; only people/businesses with a license can remove honey bees from property that is not their own.
