Blood-Filled Seafood
Fresh seafood containing blood, such as shellfish, is an optimum food for healthy coral. The nutrients in the blood itself are desirable for maintaining those in the coral in a natural manner. Mussels, oysters and shrimp are all fed fresh to the corals. Chop them into smaller pieces before adding them to the tank, or add them whole, representing the large organisms that a coral would feed off of in a normal environment.
Oyster Eggs
Oyster eggs are a perfect choice for coral food because of their small scale and high amount of nutrients. Other roe, or fish eggs, can also be substituted for oyster eggs if they are small. The eggs themselves are very small and easily digestible. They are fed to corals that are more difficult to feed, either with an inability to process larger foods, or have a high rate of rejection for them. A small amount feeds a large aquarium, making the eggs economical as well.
Coral Vitamin Supplements
Corals require a variety of nutrients, such as calcium, to create their bodily structures. Because of this, they often need supplements for growth. The supplements are found at local specialty fish stores, or even those solely devoted to corals. They can also be mixed with the seafood and oyster eggs and fed as a whole, containing a variety of nutrients in differing forms.
Digested Fish Food
As a part of a symbiotic ecosystem, one of the best foods for coral is actually fish droppings. This is a means of providing food to the corals that have been broken down by the digestive tracks of the fish. Maintaining a small amount of fish in the same tank as the coral and feeding them generic foods is one of the best ways of also maintaining the coral.
