How to Transport a Dead Starfish

Sometimes referred to as sea stars, starfish are not actual fish, but rather echinoderms, a species closely related to sand dollars and sea urchins. There are over 2,000 species of starfish dwelling in the world's oceans with the five-arm variety being the most common, though species with as many as 20 or 40 arms exist. Collecting dead starfish along the coast is a pastime of crafters and marine enthusiasts as they dry out and can be used in assorted craft and art projects, such as wedding decorations and favors. Transport dead starfish for display and other projects by allowing it to fully dry before you move it.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the starfish in a sunny area to allow it to dry. Use a paper towel or old rag underneath the starfish to catch any drainage, and do not move the starfish until it has dried completely.

    • 2

Wrap the dried starfish carefully in paper towels and old rags. Wrap the starfish at least three or four times in rags/paper towels, being careful not to break off any legs or split the starfish in two.

    • 3

Fill a tote or plastic bag with old rags or other soft fabric or packing materials. Place the starfish gently among the rags. Place one or two light rags on top of the nestled starfish, but do not pile too many rags, which might damage the starfish.

    • 4

Carry the bag or place it carefully in a truck or car so the bag will not flail about the automobile's interior. Nestle the bag containing the starfish among other bags so it stays put until it is time to remove it.
