How to Draw a Pit Bull Dog

Although small, pit bull terriers are solidly built and extremely strong. They also have powerful jaws and are capable of delivering a nasty bite. That said, if handled and reared correctly, they make for adorable and loyal pets. Their muscular stature and proud stance make them fascinating animals to draw, and a developing artist can learn a lot by examining and drawing the muscle definition of these dogs. A pit bull's face is also very expressive, much like that of a human, which gives an artist a lot of scope while drawing this canine.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a circle on your paper. The circle represents the front part of the dog's body. Sketch a smaller, circle that slightly overlaps the other circle to the right of it.

    • 2

Draw another circle just above the large circle that is slightly smaller than the second circle. Etch a diagonal line from the top edge of the circle in the direction you want the dog to face. Extend the line across 4/5 of the circle at a steep angle.

    • 3

Make two horizontal lines that cross the diagonal line on the circle that will be used as the dog's head. Create the lines so they are just above and just below the level of the eyes.

    • 4

Draw four small ovals underneath the body to represent the dog's paws. Represent the leg shape by drawing lines down from the front circle to the front two ovals and from the back circle to the two back ovals.

    • 5

Draw the dog's outline on the skeleton of shapes. Capture the dog's thick, muscular neck, short, stocky legs and flat back. You should begin to see the dog take shape as you sketch the outline.

    • 6

Sketch the pit bull's facial features. Use the side of the pencil to give the eyeballs a very dark, even shade. Leave a small part of the eyeball white. Use long, sweeping strokes to convey the dog's large, flat nose and muzzle, and the smoothness of its face.

    • 7

Draw in the pit bull's features, including claws, lines of muscular definition and fur. Use numerous short, light pencil strokes, all pointing in the same direction to create fur. Create muscular definition by using long, stark pencil lines around the neck, haunches and chest. Use the flat side of the pencil to add shading to these lines. Draw the claws using stark pencil lines that come to a sharp point at the end of the dog's toes. Contrast the claws with the furry parts of the dog's body.
