How to Clean Chicken Incubators

Purchasing an incubator and using it to observe the growth and development of chicks is an engaging science experiment enjoyed by adults and children alike. You can watch with wonder as eggs transform into baby chickens. Before beginning your experiment and after completing an incubation period it's important to properly clean and sanitize your incubator to prevent the spread of infection to future fertilized eggs.

  • Incubator
  • Fertilized chicken eggs
  • Thermometer
  • Germicidal bleach
  • Powdered detergent

      Remove all loose dirt and debris from the incubator. Mix 1 oz. of powdered detergent with warm water and scrub down the incubator. Clean and sanitize the incubator three days before setting fertilized chicken eggs in it. Cleaning, fumigating or sanitizing the incubator while eggs are incubating may damage the embryos.

      Mix 3 oz. of germicidal bleach in 1 gallon of hot water. Use a thermometer verify that the water for the bleach solution is above 140 degrees. Rinse the detergent from the incubator with the bleach mixture. Allow it to sit for five minutes.

      Rinse the incubator thoroughly with cold, clean water. Allow incubator to air dry completely before setting it up and turning it on. Allow it to reach optimal temperature and then place fertilized chicken eggs into it.
