How to Save Endangered Red Wolves

Red wolves are related to the more common gray wolf, but are smaller and colored with a reddish hue. The red wolf is currently endangered, as it was hunted to the point of near-extinction. Red wolves were naturally found in the southeastern areas of the U.S., including Florida, Texas and North Carolina. Most surviving red wolves live in captivity, though recently rescue programs have begun releasing new wolves into the wild. You can help protect the red wolf in a number of ways.

Instructions

    • 1

Adopt a red wolf through a wildlife adoption program. For a small donation, you receive a picture of the wolf you are helping as well as some general information on red wolves. The money you donate goes toward protecting wolves in the wild, lobbying the government for protections, and public education. This service is offered by several wildlife organizations.

    • 2

Write a letter to your congressional representative to let the legislator know you are concerned about the plight of wolves and hope he or she will consider that when voting for funds or new laws regarding wildlife protection. You can find your representative on the U.S. House of Representatives website.

    • 3

Donate money to a red wolf-specific charity or a wildlife protection organization. Donations are a vital part of many of these organizations' budgets and every cent helps to improve their ability to be effective in protecting animals.

    • 4

Volunteer with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service department. This federal agency is charged with protecting endangered species and is responsible for the relocation of red wolves and their supervised breeding and release. Volunteers can perform several tasks including leading tours, performing administrative work, taking photographs and helping with research.
