How to Use a Tie-Down Veil

A tie-down veil is a piece of wearable equipment used in beekeeping. The veil is part of the headpiece, which includes the helmet and the mesh veil material. The tie-down is a string that secures the veil to your body so that bees can't crawl or fly under the veil and into the headpiece. The veil often has elastic edging to provide further security against bees that could sting your face or neck.

Instructions

    • 1

Step into the beekeeping coveralls, put your arms through the armholes and zip it up the front.

    • 2

Lower the veil onto your head with the hat sitting squarely on your head. Pull the veil down so that the elastic edging sits over the collar of the coveralls. The tie-down should be in front.

    • 3

Hold one string of the tie-down veil in each hand. Pull the strings down and under the corresponding underarm. Loop the strings around your back and bring them around to the front. The left tie-down string will go under your left arm, around your back and out to the right side. The right string goes under your right arm, around your back and out the left side.

    • 4

Cross the strings across your chest. Turn your head to make sure the tie-down is not too tight. Tie the loose ends of the strings in a slipknot to secure the veil.
