Great Blue Heron
The great blue heron is a large and long-necked bird. It is the most common heron in North America. They live mostly near ponds, rivers, lakes and marshes. Although fish is their favorite food, they also eat mice, insects and other small creatures.
Western Meadowlark
The western meadowlark is a medium-sized bird which is also Oregon's state bird. They prefer living in meadows, plains and prairies. It has a melodious flutelike voice and eats seeds, insects and berries.
Golden Eagle
The golden eagle is among the largest birds of prey in all of North America. They have yellow feet and legs completely covered with feathers. An adult golden eagle has a wingspan of more than 6 feet.
Dusky Grouse
The dusky grouse --- North America's largest grouse --- resembles a chicken. They migrate from open breeding grounds to conifer forests that are denser and at higher altitudes in early autumn and return around early April. Their migration is usually only a short distance but they have been known to travel as much as 30 miles, mostly on foot. Dusky grouse eat leaves, berries, insects and buds.
Northern Hawk Owl
The northern hawk owl is almost the size of a crow with its long wings and round tail. Their practice of hunting during the day differentiates him from other species of owl. They have the ability to store food in their body for later use.
California Quail
Another bird found in Oregon is the California quail. It is found mostly in groups called coveys and feeds on seeds, insects, acorns and fresh shoots. The migration done by California quail is only within Oregon.
Crested Caracara
The crested caracara lives near seashores, desert-scrubs and prairies. It is a prey bird with long yellow feet and finely barred tail. Crested caracara make strong and steady flight with noisy wings. Their life span is up to nine years.
Sandhill Crane
The sandhill is the most common of all cranes. It is a large bird with a gray body and long legs. Its most common foods include mice, grains, insects, worms and snakes. Sandhill cranes undertake a long migration once a year.
Rock Pigeon
Rock pigeons are fast fliers but do not migrate in any season. They are found in urban, agricultural and suburban environments. They may eat seeds in the rural areas, but in cities they mostly eat human foods such as breads, popcorn, etc.
Dunlin
The dunlin is a medium-sized shorebird. It makes fast, direct flight with quick wing beats. In winter. most dunlins live in flocks and are seen in synchronized flight along the seashore.
