How to Capture Wild Anoles

The genus Anolis consists of a wide range of species generally known as anoles. Anoles are generally small arboreal insectivores. They are popularly kept as pets, particularly in those areas where they can be easily trapped or captured in the wild. The green anole is common in wooded areas of the southeastern United States. With a little preparation and patience, it is not difficult to trap your own green anole.

Cover the top of a box with plastic wrap and secure it with tape. The box should be at least six inches deep, and broad enough to comfortably hold an anole up to eight inches long.

    • 2

Cut a six-inch slit in the center of the plastic wrap.

    • 3

Place the box in a wooded area so that the top of the box is level with the ground or a log. Place several dried mealworms or crickets on top of the plastic wrap, as close to the slit as possible.

Check your trap at least once a day. Replace the bait as needed until an anole is caught.
