How to Get Rid of Egrets

Egrets are large birds that gather in flocks and create large nesting areas known as heronries. They are drawn to tall trees with dense vegetation. They are protected under the Federal Migratory Bird Act, and once they nest, it is illegal to disturb them. However, if you notice egrets in your area and they are not nesting, it is possible to drive them away. Drive away egrets from your property as early as possible, as they grow increasingly secure and determined the longer they stay.

Instructions

    • 1

Float eye-spot balloons close to the egrets. Eye-spot balloons are designed to be threatening to birds and animals, and if the birds are unsettled enough, they will leave. Move the balloons around daily to prevent the egrets from becoming accustomed to them.

    • 2

Tie strips of highly-reflective Mylar to the branches of the trees where the egrets are considering settling. The light bouncing off the Mylar strips startles the birds into taking off.

    • 3

Hang up plastic owls or hawks in the affected trees. These fake predators startle the egrets, causing them to feel insecure. Move the models regularly to ensure that the birds do not get used to them.

    • 4

Set off rope firecrackers if your local ordinances allow for them. Sharp sudden noises when the birds are roosting startle them badly.
