How to Use Sturgeons in Ponds to Clean Algae

Before you fill your pond with sturgeon, know that they live a very long time and grow quite large. The white sturgeon, for example, is the largest freshwater fish in North America; it may weigh as much as 1,800 pounds and live for more than 100 years. Sturgeon are carnivorous, eating primarily worms, larvae, shrimp and crayfish. Only young sturgeon, such as the white sturgeon, feed on algae. North America's sturgeon populations have declined because of overfishing, loss of habitat and pollution. Sturgeon are protected, and poachers face fines and prison in most states.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep the pond filled with at least 1,000 gallons of water. Expect daily water loss from evaporation; make sure the pond does not lose too much water.

    • 2

Keep the water temperature between 50 and 80 degrees Farenheit. Sturgeon cannot tolerate extreme temperatures.

    • 3

Use a high-performance pond pump to circulate the water. Sturgeon need high levels of oxygen; you must have a pump that moves at least half of your pond's total gallons per hour.

    • 4

Order sturgeon from a licensed sturgeon farm. Sturgeon are protected in North America. In Michigan, for example, a poacher can be fined more than $3,000 and jailed at least a month. Do not attempt to reel in a sturgeon and release it in your pond.
