How to Get Rid of a Chipmunk Stuck in the Window-Well

Window wells provide light to basement rooms and split-level residences, but they can also turn into traps for small animals. Because window wells are fairly steep, it can be hard for animals like chipmunks to climb out of them. Chipmunks may initially be attracted to the warmth or the shelter of a window well, but if they are stuck inside, they can starve to death or become dehydrated.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap an old kitchen towel around a length of board. The towel will provide traction for the chipmunk.

    • 2

Set the board into the window well at an angle, creating a bridge that allows the chipmunk to climb out. Be careful not to hit the chipmunk with the board as you place it in the window well.

    • 3

Leave the immediate area for at least 24 hours. The chipmunk might not use the board unless it is confident that no one is around.
