Kids' Projects on Plant & Animal Cells

To learn more about animal and plant cell structure, you can create your own cells in a science project. This can be a fun learning project for parents and children or teachers and students, and the materials are easy to obtain.
  1. Yummy Jello 3-D Animal Cell Craft

    • Create a cell project and a yummy treat at the same time with Jello, which will represent the cytoplasm of the cell. Make Jello and let it cool. Print out a picture of an animal or plant cell with components labeled. Insert fruits and candies such as raisins, gummy worms, jelly beans, grapes, mandarin orange sections, chocolate candies and jaw breakers to represent the parts of the cell. Place the Jello in a plastic bag and let it refrigerate until solid. Examine the Jello cell and eat it if you wish.

    Clay Cell Project

    • Create a cell with clay. The cell models can be as creative or as plain as you desire. You can mix clay colors to build your 3D models of cells; however, make sure that you use the clay quickly to prevent it from drying out. When the clay dries, slice the inside of the clay to create the cell components.

    Plant Cell Styrofoam Ball

    • Create a plant cell with Styrofoam balls. Use a photo of a cell that shows the inside and outside of the cell. Spray paint both Styrofoam balls the same color of your choice. To avoid breathing in fumes, open a couple of windows. Sit the balls on a large paper plate and allow them to dry. Use a sharp knife to cut one of the balls in half according to the cell photo, then draw the inside components of the cell using different permanent markers. The second ball will represent the outside of the cell. Label each cell part using name tags and tape the tags to toothpicks. Insert the toothpicks into different sections of the ball where the cell components are drawn.

    Edible Cell Pizza Project

    • If you're hungry for pizza, why not create a project that you can also eat? You can order pizza with a variety of toppings or create your own pizza. Label the crust and the toppings with toothpicks with labels attached to them. Let the crust of the pizza represent the outer cell. Then label the sauces, tomatoes, green peppers, olives and jalapeno peppers to represent the different animal or plant cell components.
