How to Protect Tadpoles

Tadpole protection can serve a very useful purpose in counteracting the decline of frog populations. Urban sprawl, industrial agriculture, pesticide use and loss of wetlands, have all contributed to a decrease in the number of frogs. The frog's lifecycle begins as an egg and progresses through a tadpole stage before becoming an adult. All of these stages require very specific conditions to thrive.

Instructions

  1. Raise Tadpoles at Home

    • 1

Learn about the needs of tadpoles and frogs before attempting to raise them. Your efforts will result in the deaths of the tadpoles if you don't provide them with water at the right temperature, proper food and other necessities.

    • 2

Provide the tadpoles with the necessities of life through their lifecycle until they metamorphose into frogs. By doing this, you decrease the percentage of tadpoles that would have been lost to predation and other sources of mortality in the wild.

    • 3

Release the young frogs into a proper environment where they have water, food sources and cover to maximize their chances of survival. Try to find a place that is far from a road.

    Protect Habitat

    • 4

Identify prime tadpole and frog habitat and work to protect it from development, damage and pollution.

    • 5

Buy the land as the most effective method of protecting it, as this will provide you with the legal right to control what is done on the land.

    • 6

Lobby at the local and national level to reduce or eliminate the use of chemical pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides, as these substances can wipe out tadpole and frog populations when they get into wild ecosystems.
