How to Dissolve Polystyrene

Polystyrene foam combines polystyrene particles with air to create a material that protects fragile materials during shipping or to create a lightweight material capable of storing liquid materials. Dissolving polystyrene requires an organic fluid rather than a solvent. Acetone is one polystyrene dissolving fluid is found at a pharmacy, grocery store or convenience store. Acetone -- nail polish remover -- is an organic fluid that does not require a special license to purchase and does not create toxic fumes during use.

  • Rigid plastic container
  • Acetone
  • Plastic spoon

Instructions

      Set a rigid plastic container on a stable work surface that sits in a well ventilated area away from open flames.

      Pour acetone in the rigid plastic container until the fluid level sits 1/2 to 3/4 inch above the container's bottom.

      Place a piece of polystyrene foam in the rigid plastic container. Allow the polystyrene to sit until it dissolves in the acetone.

      Remove the dissolved polystyrene by scooping it from the acetone with a plastic spoon. Dispose of the plastic spoon and the polystyrene by throwing it in a garbage bag.

      Pour the acetone back into the container after the dissolved polystyrene has been removed.
